Jackson is most definitely the most like me in regards to wanting to be involved and active. In March and April he had so many fun things going on. I posted a couple pictures on Instagram, but I figured I should probably blog about it as well.
Jack was the captain of a team for Battle of the Books at school. This is where the kids are given 10 or so books they need to read and then they compete in a challenge where they answer questions about the books and see which team moves on to the next level. Jackson's team was named The Fireballs. The only thing was Jack didn't read all the books. I don't know about his other teammates...Kimberly is on the left and Adalyn is on the right....Deigo or Domonic....I can't remember was their other teammate, but he was absent the the day of the competition. Part of the problem was this is a competition for 3rd - 5th graders so some of the books they were required to read I didn't feel comfortable with Jack just reading them on his own. I wanted to be able to read them with him and that was just hard. I don't know if I'm just hanging onto the reigns too tight and I should really just have let him read them on his own or not. I just worry about what he might be reading and whether or not it's appropriate and I figure if I'm reading it with him we can address what topic comes up right then and there. Anyways his team didn't move on to the next level, but they didn't do too shabby either. I think the winning team only got 4 more points that they did. They were definitely in the competition. I was so proud of Jack!!!
One day the entire 3rd grade class was sharing about their animal adaptations. They had worked so hard on their posters. An animal adaptation was where the kids were given an animal and an environment and they had to figure out how the animal would have to adapt to live in that environment and protect another animal that might be endangered. What features and skills would it need to survive that it might not have been born with.
Jack's animal adaptation was a coyote that lived in the mountains to protect bears. The coyote's adaptations were claws, teeth, a good sense of smell, good eyesight and thick fur for the winter.
Ms. Asselin had all her kids write out the info about their animal on cue cards so the kids wouldn't have to have the poster turned towards them or they wouldn't have to block it with their body pointing to the different parts. I stayed around and checked out a few kids posters and listened to their presentation in each of the 3rd grade classes. The kids were so proud of their work and it was really interesting to see and hear what they came up.
At the start of spring break Jackson brought home a paper about The Egg Drop Challenge. I had never heard of this before, but then gradually I kept seeing things about it pop up on Facebook. I'm still not sure if this was a new thing or an every year around this time thing.
Jackson decided to make a capsule to hold his egg in. The capsule was two IKEA kids cups taped together with a grocery sack as a parachute. At first he only wrapped the egg in tissues, but that time it broke. After that we padded the egg with tissues and felt.
It was a total success! He took his invention with him to school after spring break and they tested it at school and it worked there as well.
During spring break all the kids had dentist appointments and Jack's teeth were grown in enough that he could finally have a consultation with an orthodontist. Poor Jack's mouth just doesn't have enough room. He has a bit of an overbite and his top teeth cover up too much of his bottom teeth, but that's not the worst of it. One of his bottom teeth has nowhere to go. It's literally right behind his bottom front teeth like a second row of teeth.
He had to get a bunch of pictures taken and they are sending those to the insurance company to see if they will cover him getting braces or not. No matter what he has to have braces it just will be us paying for all of it, some of it or none of it. I'm praying that at least the insurance company will cover some of it!
