For Jack's birthday his main gift was a skateboard so for another one of our field trips at the end of the year we headed to the skatepark.
We were originally going to go to one right next to the church where the kids attend Taekwondo, but one of the other Dads there said it was definitely not for beginners. He told us about this one in downtown Kent right near the Kent Regional Justice Center. We were actually going to go to it the same day we hiked Clark Lake, but we didn't know there was an event at The Showare Center so all the parking was full.
We went back on Wednesday, June 8th. The skatepark was deserted so we had the place to ourselves which was nice.
There was a lot of interesting graffiti and thankfully not much that had inappropriate sayings. There was a lot of the saying Bekuz and we later found out there was a tagger that used that slogan. He loved to go to this skatepark and he died...not sure how or when, but now people continue tagging his slogan in honor of him.
Here's a video of Jack making it down the ramp!
Ella wanted to give it a go!
Since there were so many thing to look at we also played a fun game of Eye Spy!
A few days later I took the kids to another skatepark. This one was in Des Moines and it's right across the street from the Police Station.
There isn't any graffiti at all at this one which makes sense.
Zeke had fun going down the ramp on his scooter!
This skatepark isn't as smooth as the other one.
Getting better and better!
Jackson looking like a cool skater!
More scooter fun!
Ella's turn to try the ramp...did not go very well. She got some road rash and a huge bruise. She has not wanted to try skateboarding every since this.
The kids haven't asked to go to the skatepark for awhile now. I should probably take them again soon though. Jackson does wear all the protective gear, but I know that accidents can still happen. Recently we had a friend break her wrist while rollerblading at a skatepark. She had a compound fracture and had to have surgery where they put in a plate with screws. Yikes!
