At the end of 2023, we decided it was time to start getting bids for a new roof. It had been something that we'd known we needed to do for a few years not because there were any signs of failure per se, but we honestly didn't even know when the roof on our house had been put on and we wanted to address it before we had any issues come up. We've lived in our house since 2005 so we know the roof is almost or is over 20 years old. When Owen got his license and our insurance rates skyrocketed I thought it would be nice to price around for insurance, but due to the fact that our roof was most likely 20+ years old insurance companies won't even give you a quote. So it was time!
The first person we contacted was our old friend Fred Meyer...he owns Frey Meyer Roofing. He actually ended up stopping by the same day Michael texted him. It was so nice to see him...it had been years.
The second company we had bid the job was my friend Alicia from MOPS...her husband co-owns Three Tree Roofing. They were super professional.
The third company was NW Roofscapes that's owned by an acquaintance that we used to go to church with. Ironically he used to work with Fred Meyer. Jonathan came out and did a very thorough estimate.
They all would have been awesome companies to go with, but ultimately we ended up going with Fred Meyer...he's been in business the longest and he gave us a great estimate....even though the other companies estimates were very comparable.
On Tuesday January 16th, before the workers started tearing off the old roof Michael wanted was me to get a picture of the roof actually on the house. We were having an insurance agent come out to assess the water damage from the burst pipe and he didn't want the insurance agent to drive up and see we didn't have a roof and then think the water damage was from that. It was definitely not from the roof.
The next day the truck showed up to deliver all the roofing supplies.
That was a fun process watching them lift the supplies off the truck and hoist them over our fence. I don't actually know what they did with them after that. I would imagine they were moved right up on the roof, but the weather was so gross I didn't go outside. They didn't come out on Thursday since it was so yucky, but Fred told us they would be finishing everything on Friday.
The very next day it was really nice and the guys showed up and got to work. It was a bit noisy doing homeschool with all the stapling. One of the workers had a pretty nice rhythm going on and at some points it was almost like he was stapling to the beat of a song.
Look at that beautiful black roof. I know it was hard to tell in the before picture, but our roof before had a brown hue to it and I hated it. I had wanted a black roof for a long time. We did spend a little bit more to have the architectural shingles on the top ridge of the roof. They look so nice! The best part is now we know when the roof was put on and we know it's going to last us decades!!!
