Pallet Herb Garden!

Around Jack's Birthday, Ga-Ga & Pa were supposed to take the kids for a weekend so Michael and I could get the trailer ready for our first camping trip of the year. Well.....2020....Ga-Ga got the regular stomach flu and had to quarantine and in the end our camping trip got canceled so it didn't really matter. Ga-Ga felt so bad though once she was recovered they took the kids so we could have a break.

We honestly didn't even do that much. I watched Rachael's kids so she could go meet her new niece, we binge watched a new show on Amazon Prime, went and fed Micah & Kim's cat and chickens and just relaxed. My only real goal for this kid free time was to make an herb garden.

One of the ladies that I follow on Instagram made an herb garden using a pallet and I thought it was so cute. I've been wanting something like this for a long time, but Michael didn't want planters sitting on the new deck getting it all yucky. The pallet idea was a perfect solution. Also Lance and Rachael had collected a bunch of pallets to make their garden fence and they had a few extras. I found one that was almost in perfect condition.

Michael and I went to Lowe's and got all the supplies I needed. I got 6 of these buckets...they cost less than $6 a piece. I also got two cans of Rustoleum Satin Black spray paint. Rustoleum is my favorite spray paint. The little thing between the buckets and the spray paint are the hooks to hold the buckets. Those cost about $2 a piece.

Two cans of spray paint ended up being exactly what I needed!

In the video the lady on IG made she only drilled one hole, but I was worried that the it wouldn't be enough drainage. Now fast forward a month I really wish I had only drilled one hole.

I was really big on good drainage so I put a little crushed rock in the bottom of the buckets and then filled them with dirt.

I couldn't find all the herbs I wanted at Lowe's so we drove down to Carpinito Brothers and I got what I needed even though I had to get some seeds instead of plants.

The original design had all the buckets in line with each other, but I know that Basil can get pretty tall so I wanted them to be staggered. Once I did that though the middle just looked bare. I got to thinking it would be fun to have some form of metal art in the middle. That's when I shopped my own house and found this Americana Star hanging up in our office. It fit perfectly in the middle....like it was planned that way! I love happy accidents!

I thought that Michael would want the outdoor rug under the pallet, but he was actually fine with it being set directly on the deck. This is the northeast section of the deck and it gets a good amount of sun. Unfortunately because I was so focused on drainage my plants have had a hard time retaining moisture. It hasn't been a total loss though. I've harvested both the lettuce plants once and they are starting to grow back. I've clipped from my cilantro a couple times too...unfortunately that's going to seed now so I need to fully clip it. As for the seeds those plants have barely grown so I doubt I'll get any basil.

My plan for next year is to drill one hole in the middle of the buckets and plug the other 4 holes with caulk. I'm also going to buy that Miracle Grow Moisture Control Soil. I've used that before in pots and it really does a great job. I will also try to buy my herbs early enough that I can get plants and not have to plant seeds.

Mother's Day Weekend!

The weather for Mother's Day weekend was going to be A-mazing so my one wish was for us to work as a family in the yard creating a new garden space for my fruits and veggies.

On Friday when Rachael and I took the kids to the track to walk...Zeke was complaining about his eye hurting. He'd been having some eczema flare ups around his eyes so I thought he accidentally rubbed some of the cream in his eyes. By the time we got down to the track he was crying and it was really bothering him. I took a look at it and realized that he was having an allergic reaction to something...most likely grass or pollen. He'd had this happen before. He said he went into a plant to find something and he was also wearing his coat that he left out in the grass all night. Who knows! Thankfully Michael was home so he came and got Zeke from the track and went to Bartell's to get some Benadryl.

This was how he looked once we got home from the track. Poor guy...thankfully it didn't really hurt it just looked awful!

Before we got started on yard work Michael decided to spray deck cleaner on the deck. We moved all the cushions inside and the kids decided it would be fun to build a fort.

Ella in her little room under the table.

It basically took up half of our dining room. It was pretty epic!

First task was to remove the big shrubs next to the play structure.

I told the kids that they needed to be outside and I wanted them to help. It's one my favorite things when we work together as a family. The three older kids were hauling branches with me over to a tarp on the easement.

That a big shrub!!!

Making a dent!

While taking out the shrubs we found plenty of yard toys that the kids had lost over the years. One of them was Jack's boomerang!

Almost finished!

There was even more space back there than I originally thought. It was amazing how much ground space was covered up by shrubs!!!

We are pretty sure that little tree is an apple tree. Our neighbors tree right on the other side of the fence is an apple tree and the leaves look the same. I wasn't sure how it would have planted itself though. All the apples that fall off rolled down the hill and would never be able to roll up and over this far. Then Michael told me that about 3 years ago the boys grabbed one of the apples and they used it for target practice with the BB gun. After they were done with it he said he chucked it into the middle of the shrubs right there. Crazy!!! I definitely didn't want to take it out so we are working with it.

This was the stopping point on Friday!

This day was also our 21st Wedding Anniversary. We celebrated by having some friends over from church. We did a backyard fire pit night where everyone brought there own food. Michael went and picked up Famous Dave's for us...I was craving BBQ! We sat around the fire and just chatted it was great. Very low key, but fun way to celebrate!

On Saturday morning we put our truck to work! Have I mentioned that I LOVE having a truck!!! We had piled all the shrubs up on that blue tarp on the left the day before. The older boys and I worked at getting all those branch cut into smaller pieces and loaded them into the truck. We had two blow up pools that had holes in them and needed to be taken to the dump as well. We ended up using those pools like a tarp to cover the whole load. A week before this Michael and I had gone to Costco to buy a new TV...ours just quit working and we also picked up the tie downs for the truck.

While we were loading the truck Michael was working away at building the garden bed for me. We had these leftover concrete blocks from our big retaining wall we built years ago. In fact we had exactly the correct amount we needed!

Zeke man wanted to help, but I really didn't want him handling the plants. His face was already looking so much better. He mainly helped Daddy by holding the level and handing him tools.

Looking good! When I had envision the garden space I was thinking he would use the concrete blocks on all 4 sides, but Michael thought that would be a waste...why not just use the tree rounds as part of the border. We know eventually they will rot, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

For lunch we swung by MCD's and ate in the truck and then went to the dump. We waiting in the line for an hour and a half! Everyone was going to the dump and since they had every other spot blocked off to adhere to social distancing it was taking longer. They were also checking ID and making sure you actually lived in King County. The kids did great though and it was a fun outing.

After that we went to the Carpinito Brothers and bought 2 blueberry bushes, 4 tomato plants and 3 zucchini plants and a couple plants to fill in areas in our garden beds that were sparse. We were also picking up a yard of dirt for the new garden bed.

It was funny because as we waited for the topsoil to be loaded into the truck another guy pulled up and asked us if we were waiting. I chatted with him a bit and told him this was our first time getting anything like this in our new to us truck. That's when we looked at our truck bed and his eyes got all big and he said..."That's a nice bed!!" I thought it was so funny and told Michael we've already had someone have truck bed envy over our truck! It was cute!!!

These older boys did so great with helping unload the dirt! They took breaks, but they worked so hard. They definitely needed showers after we were done. Unfortunately 1 yard was not enough so Michael and Owen went back and got 2 more yards in one trip....have I mentioned how much I love having a truck!?!?! :)

By this point we were done for the day! We got cleaned up and headed over to Lance & Rachael's for dinner. Rachael made the yummiest Chicken Wings in 3 flavors and I loved them so much I went out and bought the same type of spices to give them a go myself.

The next day was Mother's Day! After online church we all went in the truck to Lowe's to buy the top stones for the garden bed. We also went to Carpinito Brothers again, but I honestly can't remember why. I just know we were down by Kent Station and Michael wanted to buy lunch for us to celebrate Mother's Day. We tried to get lunch from Mama Stortini's, but they weren't opening until 2pm. Then I called Red Robin, but they aren't serving the sandwich that I usually order because of their limited menu so that was a no go. Michael said go ahead and call the Mama Stortini's in Federal Way and we'd just have a later lunch. I did and that particular one was actually already open, but they weren't serving pizza and that's what I had my heart on. It was a total bust! I was a bit grumpy because I had just wanted to have my leftovers from Famous Dave's and I was fine with that, but then it just turned into a fiasco. We came home and ate leftovers and all was fine after that!

My only goals for the rest of the day were to plant my garden and read in my hammock. While I was laying in the hammock Michael came out and said he was going down to Viva Marina in Des Moines to pick up a Margherita pizza and Caesar salad for dinner for us. It was so sweet! The pizza was amazing and was just what I was craving!!!

My pastor also delivered a rose to me for Mother's Day. It was the most beautiful and interesting colored rose I've ever seen. It smelled so good and it almost lasted 3 weeks!

This was it after over 2 weeks! It brought a smile to my face every time I walked into the dining room!

Side Note...that's a picture of Zeke when he was around 2-3 months old. That was in a picture frame, but it fell off the wall and broke. I just need to head down to IKEA and pick up a new one. I know they probably won't have the exact one anymore...these have been on the wall for quite a few years. There were 8 frames in all that matched so I know it's going to bug me if one doesn't match. Buying 8 new frames is going to cost a pretty penny so I'm putting it off!

Flowers!

This year it's been so fun to enjoy all the hard work we put into the garden.

Sunflowers are my favorite and it was the first time I've been successful in growing them. I was always starting them inside and they really get too weak because they don't go through hardship....they are too pampered. They need the cold and the wind in order to grow a thick stalk to hold up that big sunflower. Next year I plan on planting tons more and just putting the seeds straight into the ground.

It was so fun to see all the bulbs we planted come up. I love that they didn't all bloom at once.

The dahlias are gorgeous! They were so funny because they were really slow growing and then all of the sudden this little plant just took off and had a ton of buds on it! It was nuts!

I love how the dahlias coming in all different shapes and colors!

We planted a ton of lilies and they were all gorgeous! Plus they made it smell SO good outside!

All of my gladiolas came up and they were this lovely red color and there were also some yellow ones as well!

My yucca plant grew two flower stalks this year!

My hostas have just taken over this whole bed. There is actually a blueberry bush back there and we need to transplant so it can have a change to grow!

Out of all the bulbs we planted there were only two kinds that didn't come up. Honestly we were surprised any came up....we figured it would be plant this year and then they would bloom next year. Hopefully the two different kinds that didn't come up this year will make an appearance next year. Even if they don't we had great success and the fact that they are bulbs is just awesome. I love perennials!

Giant Zucchini!

My garden has been hit or miss this year. The zucchini starts I got just did not do well in the backyard. I'm not sure if it was because they had a little too much shade, or if it was because we used steer this year instead of compost. Who knows? I am going to use compost next year because I think that's part of why my tomatoes didn't do the best.

For Easter I got some fun seeds so I started those in the kitchen window and some of them made it and some didn't. I ended up with two pumpkin plants. I was super excited to not have to get pumpkins at the patch this year. It's so fun to grow your own stuff anyway. I planted the two starts in the front next to Michael's car. I really isn't a vegetable garden....it's where we have some of our bulbs planted and a few other ornamental bushes. It is a nice sunny spot though and it has a lot of room to stretch out.

After a few weeks I realized that one of the plants wasn't a pumpkin plant it was a zucchini plant. Super cool! I didn't really need another zucchini plant, but that was okay. Thankfully I didn't decide to pull it out because the zucchini plants that were in the backyard gave me zero zucchini! This zucchini plant on the other hand has been a zucchini producing machine! My case in point....

My giant zucchini!

Giant zucchini next to an average grocery store sized zucchini!

I had walked in the house holding it like a baby because seriously it was the same size as baby Jaymes! I swear the zucchinis can go from normal sized to jumbo overnight! I left this bad boy on the counter for quite a few days. I knew it wouldn't taste the best since the middle section would have so many seeds and be too watery. Then my mom made my grandma's zucchini bread and it was by far the best zucchini bread I've ever had. I have made lemon zucchini bread, chocolate zucchini bread....you name it and I never like them! This recipe has nuts and raisins and it's amazing!!!

So I hacked up that jumbo zucchini and was able to get 10 cups of shredded zucchini even with not using the seedy center part. I separated them into 2 cup portions. Each of these bags will make 2 loaves of zucchini bread! I'm so excited to have all this in the freezer so I can make zucchini bread during the winter months.

I did have another smaller zucchini on hand so I shredded that and made up a batch of bread right then. Oh my the house smelled so good! And just in case you'd like to make this deliciousness for yourself....here's the recipe!

You're welcome!

Plant Babies!

It has been so nice these last few weeks getting to see the fruits of our labor in regards to our yard. We did plant some plants, but then we planted a ton of bulbs. Everyday we go out and check for more "plant babies" as we call them.

Some of the bushes we planted are starting to bloom. I have no idea what this is, but it's beautiful!

It is so fun to see them poke up out of the ground and then watch them get bigger and bigger every day.

We also have been taking advantage of the nice weather when we go outside. Zeke loves to come with me and swing on my bench while we listen to the lovely sound of water from Penelope!

This is my golden something azaleas....it's so gorgeous!

More bulbs poking through!

This is one of our ground covers. It's amazing at how often they bloom!

I can't wait until the yard is in full bloom....I will definitely have more pictures!

Planting!

During spring break I brought out the kids Easter presents from Santa Al & Ms. Ellen. They were these cute greenhouse kits.

I had the kids work on these in the garage. I figured it would be better out there since they would probably make a mess.

Each kit came with 6 mini pots and 6 peat pellets.

The kids had to put water on the pellets so they would grow into dirt.

The instructions said they only needed 1 tsp of water, but it took a lot more than that actually.

Once the pots were full with dirt the kids got to plant their seeds. The kits came with two different types of gourds....birdhouse and baby bottle.

Then the lids got snapped on and it was time to put them outside.

All ready to see if we can grow some gourds!

The kids had lots of fun....I have no idea if we will actually grow anything...the peat pellets were interesting for sure.

Soaking up the sun!
