Goals for 2021!

Here are our goals for 2021!

House Goals:

Transform the backyard into a bigger kid play area by....disassemble the play structure, moving the trampoline into the gravel area, builting a platform/tree house and building a ninja warrior course.

Put medicine cabinets in the kids' bathroom - We've actually already accomplished this last weekend!

Have a heat pump and Halo filter installed upstairs.

Money Goals:

Replenish 3 - 6 months

Save for our September 2021 Road Trip

Start furniture fund - When we planned these goals we hadn't received our stimulus check yet so once we got that we decided to use that to purchase a whole new living room set. We are still starting this fund, but we're calling it the Household Fund instead. It will be good to have money set aside in case our refrigerator or something else big goes out.

Save for new driveway

Family Goals:

Get outside more...go on hikes & bike rides!

Be consistent with having Game Night on Tuesdays & Family Movie Night on Fridays.

Vacation Goals:

To go camping at least 2 times...once to Oasis in Ephrata

Attend the Family Reunion in Oregon

To drive the North Cascades Highway

September Road Trip

Personal Goals:

Michael:

- Go on monthly Dates with Lyndsay

- Golf under 90 strokes

- Weigh less than 190

Lyndsay:

- Go on monthly Dates with Michael

- Start working out on the elliptical again

- Look into starting therapy - I actually found a really great Christian therapist that's in our insurance network. I've been "seeing" ie...zoom meeting her for a few weeks and she's been great!

- Have Cranial Sacral Therapy done again - I just started this last week. I'm hoping to do 3 sessions and then go in maybe once every couple of months for a tune up.

Owen:

- To buy Starcraft 3.

Jack:

- To get on the Honor Roll.

Ella:

- To not get in fights with my friends.

Zeke:

Review: 2020 Goals!

Let's review the our Goals for 2020!

House Goals:

Install Flagpole - We installed our flagpole in April 2020!

Get Halo installed on the furnace - Lance installed the Halo for us last year!

Go through and organize everything - We didn't organize everything, but we did organize the garage and that was the area that needed it most.

Maintain yard & garden beds - I think we did a good job of this...we even built a new garden bed!

Patch and paint all interior damage - Michael did patch and paint the damaged walls.

Paint trim around all the windows - All my window trim still hasn't been painted. :)

Money Goals:

Save for truck - We Saved!

Sell Fusion - We sold the Fusion to a wonderful lady at church, she loves it and we still get to see Little Red in action!

Buy Truck - We bought our truck right before the shutdown at the end of March!

Replenish 3-6 month fund - This one is always on our list and while we did save we also end up using it sometimes too.

Vacation Goals:

April - Michael's work conference - Canceled!
June - Camping @ Deception Pass - Canceled!
July - Family Reunion in Wyoming - Attended....so thankful for this road trip!
July/Aug - Family Reunion in Oregon - Attended...it was so great to be with family!
September - Michael's work conference - Canceled!
October - San Antonio Trip to celebrate Michael and I turning 40! - Canceled!

Family Goals:

Take one kid on a date each month - We started out so good in the beginning of the year and then everything shutdown. We could have gotten back into it and been creative, but I think I was just too depressed since it wasn't able to be what I wanted it to be. We are definitely going to try to make this more of a priority this year. Maybe not individual dates, but at least trying to do small fun things each month.

Do a family fun activity every other month with all the kids - This wasn't really possible since so many things were shutdown, but I do feel like we had a lot of fun last year. We went to Wyoming and Oregon for Family Reunions, camping twice and to Great Wolf Lodge. We made the most of 2020 that's for sure.

Play more games together - I feel like this isn't a quantifiable goal. This year we have deemed Tuesday nights game night. Of course that doesn't mean we won't play games on other nights, but it will hold us accountable to at least play games together on that night.

Go to Wild Waves @ least 6x - Hahaha....Shutdown!

Michael's Goals:

Have 2 co-worker BBQ's - These were intended to be BBQ's at our house so that didn't happen, but they did do a couple BBQ's at work.

Have more people over from church or the neighborhood - We did have a couple neighbors over just prior to the shutdown so we did what we were able to do.

Host game nights - Nope!

Incident Command School - Michael is actually in the process of finishing this right now.

Play w/kids more - Again this isn't a quantifiable goal so there's no way to know if he actual met it.

Read Extreme Ownership - Michael did finish this book!

Lyndsay's Goals:

Workout regularily - twice with Rachael and twice a home each week - I do  regularly workout with Rachael, but once the kids weren't in school anymore working out at home was more difficult. Sure I could make time for it, but I know my limits and that was one thing that had to go for my sanity. During the summer we were going to the track 3 times a week and walking at least 3 miles. It made a huge difference in my mood. I can't wait until the weather is nicer and we can get back to that.

Mentor new believers - Michael and I led a Rooted group through our church via zoom. There was a couple that were just getting plugged into the church. Unfortunately there were a lot of changes going on at our church and they don't come anymore. I don't know if they go to church at all. I've been praying for them a lot lately!

Do devotions with kids every night & every morning - We have been faithful with this. I read a chapter to the kids every morning and we usually have great Bible discussions. At night we'll read a chapter or do a devotional with them.

Read Relationship book with Owen & Jack - We did this.

Read books during the day - In the beginning of the year my goal was to read during the day so that once Michael got home I wouldn't have my nose in a book and could spend time with him. Now that the kids are homeschooled that's a little more difficult. Sometimes they finish early and I'll have some time, but there are also times where Michael will watch a show at night and I'll sit next to him reading and that's okay!

Don't worry about politics - Oh man I should have had this goal post-it-noted all over the dang house! No...I worried about politics WAY TOO MUCH. Once I got to December though I decided to stop listen to my Podcasts. I didn't want what was going on to steal my joy during the Christmas season.

Kids Goals:

Owen - Buy the computer game Starcraft 3 - This game still hasn't been released! We aren't even sure when it's going to be!

Jack - Finish AWANA book so he can go to camp - Jack did finish his book, but Camp was of course canceled!

Ella - To get to a level 1R in her reading - Since Ella has been homeschooling her reading has improved SO MUCH! I have no idea what level she's at since that's not how ACE curriculum works. Definitely having that one on one attention and daily routine of reading has drastically benefitted her.

Zeke - Continue working on talking like a big boy & try to be more careful to not hurt himself....by hurt himself I mean he's just klutzy - Zeke hasn't been hurting himself as much, but he is still working on not using a baby voice.

Review Goals - 2019!

I love making goals! I'm not a resolution gal, but goals are my jam! The funny thing is once we set our goals for the year I never go back and look at them. I really should post them somewhere so I can make sure we are actually working towards them throughout the year!

Here's how we did for 2019!

Goals for 2019

Savings Goals:

Replenish 3-6 months savings

This goal did not happen mainly because we were in full on finish the house mode. With having new siding and new windows installed from our insurance claim it just felt like the right time to get everything done. Deck, gutters, stain, garage doors...etc.

Save $100 a month towards the Kids' Cars

This is such a habit now we don't even need to have this listed as one of our goals anymore...it's just a given!

Save $200 a month towards camping/vacations

We ended up only going camping twice last year and then Michael and I went on our big vacation to Maui. There wasn't really a reason to save that much each month and due to the house projects we were putting money towards other things. We are actually doing that this year though.

Sell the Ford Fusion

Selling the Fusion took a back seat since we knew we weren't going to be able to save enough to actually a buy a truck.

Save up enough money to buy a truck

We did save money for a truck, but not enough to actually get one...this goal will be happening this year though!

Home Goals:

Buy garage doors & install

Yes...done!

Rebuild & stain deck

Yes..done!

Rebuild fence in some areas & paint

Yes...done!

Stain kids playset

Yes...done!

Paint Zeke's room

Yes....we painted Zeke's old room and changed it into the new and improved playroom

Patch and touch up Ella's room & paint clubhouse

No...we didn't do any touch up in Ella's room.

Family Goals:

Play more games together

We are always better at this towards the beginning on the year. I think when the weather is yucky out it's just easier to play games, but once it's nice outside we just want to go outside and play. No matter what, the goal is to spend more time together as a family and I really felt like we did that last year.

Go camping at least 4x

Fail...with the house life was too crazy to fit 4 in.

Take older boys fishing

This didn't happen either.

Invite neighbors over for a BBQ

With the house in disarray and free time being nonexistent we did not do this. We had one group of friends over from church and that was it. This is a goal for 2020 though.

Invite people from church over

We had that one group of folks over for a BBQ.

Go to Wild Waves @ least 6x (I bought season passes)

I believe we made it to Wild Waves 5 times, but honestly with how busy summer was I really do count that as a win!

Lyndsay's Goals:

Organize & purge house

This absolutely happened...I was an organization machine last year...even the basement got a total makeover!

Read the Bible 15 minutes a day

I started out the year good, but then I didn't stick with it. What I did stick with is listening to the Daily Audio Bible with the kids right before school. We didn't do this everyday, but it was definitely a nice habit.

Curl hair more often

I won't say I curled my hair more often, but I will say that I did more with my hair and wore it in different ways.

Take kids on individual dates

We did this a couple times, but without a set schedule it was more random that I wanted it to be. This year we are being more intentional with this.

Go on dates with Michael more often

Michael and I really did make each other more of a priority last year. With the kids being at Awanas every Wednesday, his 2 work conferences a year and then getting to go away for our anniversary trip to Maui I think we rocked this goal.

Plant garden & tend to it

We did spruce up the garden and I was really faithful with watering it this year. The only vegetable I grew were tomatoes, but they did so well I was able to can more jars than I thought I would be able to.

Create a weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning schedule

I created it, but I didn't keep to it. I'm such a planner when it comes to planning meals and vacations, but I absolutely hate planning when I'm going to clean my house. I like to do this more on a whim when I'm in the mood to clean. Since I was dealing with allergies this summer I did go through each room and do a major deep clean which was great since we'd been neglecting it due to all the house projects.

Sew new curtains for the trailer

I went out and bought a bunch of new stuff for the trailer....curtains, rugs and flooring. I was planning on doing a whole makeover. Then when I finally got to the point where I would have the time to do it I looked into how much of a big job it would be and I decided...NOPE! I had done so much already...built outdoor furniture, made a wooden flag, burned a deck, built new pillars. I ended up returning everything and the best part was I didn't feel guilty for saying enough!

Michael's Goals:

Golf at least once a month during the summer

He didn't golf once a month, but he did go more last year than any other year. I got him a gift card in his stocking so hopefully once the weather gets nicer he'll be able to make time to go more often.

Have 2 BBQ's with co-workers

He did not get to this because half the summer we were working on the deck so we had no place to have a BBQ at. This is a goal for 2020 though.

Take Jack to a baseball game

This did happen because Ga-Ga & Pa bought tickets for Jack's birthday present. It was a fun time!

Kids Goals:

Owen:

Get more sleep

I will say that our kids all get a great amount of sleep. They are usually in their rooms by 8-8:30 and then asleep no later than 9pm. They get up every weekday morning at 7am so that's 10 hours of sleep. Owen did start taking Melatonin again which has helped him get to sleep quicker.

Spend more time with Jordan

Owen was more intentional with spending time with Jordan last year.

Jack:

Get more exercise (Track & Club Victory)

Jack did do track, but I'm not sure if he did Club Victory...I don't know if they have that for the middle schoolers.

Stop annoying Owen

I don't know if anyone can actually stop annoying Owen, because the things that annoy him are more numerous than the stars!

Spend more time with Hansi

Jack did great getting to see Hansi more last year. Sleepovers, Awanas Camp, Wild Waves, Youth Group and D&D.

Ella:

Keep my room cleaner

Ella's idea of clean and my idea of clean greatly differs so this is a hard one. I have found out that Ella LOVES it when I clean and organize her room. I mean LOVES...Acts of Service is totally her love language. Usually if I clean it she can keep it looking nicer for a couple months.

Brush hair more often

She did brush her hair almost every morning and she's been really great about brushing it after showering.

See Papa more often

All the kids got to see Papa and Ruth more often this last year. With them watching the kids for us the 2 times we went to Michael's work conferences and then the younger two got to go over for the day while the older boys were at camp...it was great! We also had them over a few times for dinner or lunch which was nice.

Ella doesn't necessarily sit down and read to us, but she has gotten more interested in picking up books and seeing what she can read. Getting her weekly tutoring has been the best thing and I know it's just going to continue being beneficial for her.

Go to Kendra & Lily's more often

If Ella had her way she'd go over or have friends over every day. She loves her friends!

Zeke:

Use a big boy voice all the time

This is something that Zeke really struggles with and we have just recently cracked down on him and he's finally making progress!

Listen the first time

Zeke is easily distracted so this can be hard. I will say he has improved on listening especially if I really get his attention and tell him to focus.

I'd say with all the craziness with the house, we did a great job getting to as many of our goals as we could. It's always so fun to look back at the last year and see how much we've accomplished.

Outdoor Furniture!

A couple years ago I got this idea in my head that I wanted to build something by myself. I follow quite a few DIYer's and in the process of following one I found these plans for an outdoor sectional. I have always wanted an outdoor sectional, but they are SO expensive! Plus they are usually made of some sort of lightweight metal or wicker. I wanted something that was heavy that wouldn't move around when you sat down or wouldn't fly away in a wind storm. I also never like the cushions that come with the furniture you buy as a set. They are always plain colors like beige and they are only a couple inches thick so you know they aren't going to be very durable!

Fast forward a couple years to when we were shopping for all the wood we would need to rebuild our deck and I decided I was going to go for it! I've explained it to people like this....right before I turned 35 I had this goal that popped into my head and I decided I wanted to run 35 minutes straight before I turned 35. I started running in May and before my birthday in September I actually ran 37 minutes straight. After that I quit running! I met my goal! This is kind of like that....I've had this goal to build something by myself to prove that I could do it so I wanted to set out to accomplish that goal.

I also wanted to be safe though so I waited until the kids were on summer break so someone could call 911 if so some reason I needed their services! :)

I decided on the week of June 24th as my building week. The night prior I had Michael show me everything I needed to know about the tools I was using....the chop saw and the cordless drill. I specifically wanted to do all the work while Michael was at work so I wouldn't be able to ask for help. I did end up calling him once, but that was only because I couldn't figure out how to get the saw to open up...it was stuck shut. He had to tell me where the lock pin was so I could pull it out.

Here's all my tools!

The plans I used are from Ana White...she is amazing! She lists out everything you need to build, with pictures and the plans are free!

The first thing I did was start cutting all my boards to size.

Once I was done cutting I had to clean up my work area. I can't stand working when there is a bunch of sawdust everywhere!!!

Then I started screwing things together. This is one of the legs. The reason I really loved this design plan was the simplicity of it. It only requires you to make straight cuts, it's all the same wood...2x4's and you use all the same screws.

Here's the frame!

Next up was attaching the frame to the legs. As you can see by the holes on that top piece of wood I had originally screwed in the frame level with the legs, but that was wrong. The nice thing is....screws can come out!

The screws that Michael bought for the deck were the same screws I needed to use, but they ended up being almost too long. I had to be really careful not to over tighten them or they would poke through. You can just barely see one of the screws trying to come through in the above picture.

Monday, June 24th...I build a coffee table! It was so much fun!!! It only took me a couple of hours and it was really an easy first build! When Michael got home that night I met him in the garage wiggling my fingers showing him that they were all still there! :)

On Tuesday, June 25th I wanted to move onto the next project....building a couch.

All the wood cut and ready to go! The plans call for you to use cedar which smells amazing! It's not the cheapest wood, but it's so pretty!

My friend Margie came over to hang out with me so she got some pictures. It was the same sort of process....build the legs and then the frame. Screw it all together and there you go!

Jack, Hansi and I hanging out on the new couch!

After getting the cushions on I realized that nothing was going to keep them from sliding off the sides. That when I decided to alter her design and add in some side pieces. You can see in the above picture how I placed another piece of wood to keep the cushions in.

The cushions are my favorite!!! I love turquoise!!! I got these at Lowe's and they are the most expensive part of the whole project. I think I spent about $550 on cushions and pillows. But....they are really nice quality cushions. They are at least 4 inches thick and I got them in a color I love. Someone asked if I made them and I probably could have, but it would have cost me the same if not more to do that. The foam is not cheap and outdoor fabric is spendy...plus I don't have time for that! :)

On Wednesday, June 26th I build another couch, but this time I only put an arm on one side of the couch. That was so it could fit together with the other couch and become a sectional.

Ta Da!!!

I got the fun outdoor rug at Lowe's as well! I LOVE it!!! I was so excited and empowered that I built that! Seriously if you have a dream to do something then do it! It's such a great feeling to accomplish your dream!

A few hours after I took this picture we had some major rain coming our way so I had the boys help me move the couch under the covered area of our deck. Even though it's outdoor furniture I didn't want it to get soaked before I even had time to enjoy it!

The very next day I took some time to sit on my furniture and read! It was so nice!!!

Even though the kids were having some time on their Kindles they decided to come out and sit with me...that is until the Wifi signal wasn't the best!

After seeing the furniture set up under the covered area I decided that I actually liked it that way. It will save my cushions from being exposed as much to the elements and we have an umbrella for our table so we might as well use that. However after seeing the furniture like that I decided I should build something else as well. This was my adaptation of Ana White's coffee table. I just changed the measurements to work for what I wanted. I also had to go back to the hardware store and get a few more boards.

Those are some pretty tall legs.

Because this is my design there were a few things that didn't work out the way I thought they would, but in the end it turned out nice!

Unlike the coffee table I decided to add lower braces to the legs since the table was so tall.

Here's the table in it's final location. I though it would be a nice addition behind the couch.

This is the exact view you see when you come out of our dining room onto the deck. I think this table is going to come in handy when we have BBQ's!

Our next big project is rebuilding the deck so we'll be focusing on that for the next few weeks. I will eventually stain the furniture. Right now I'm thinking a color called Kona. I love dark rich brown colored stain. Michael wants to stain the deck a natural cedar color so the contrast will look amazing.
